Building Your Own Boat Monitoring System with Arduino

There are lots of neat systems on the market that can help you monitor your boat and check on its status. However the downside is that most of these are a black box meaning that its hard to add functionality later and that youre locked into their system, monthly payment, etc. So lets brainstorm and think about what a good remote boat monitoring system would need. Bilge Pump Monitor As far as I can tell this is one of the biggest problems that people have with boats is the failure of their bilge pump and or batteries. So we want to know how often that silly thing is cycling on and we dont want to make the wiring any more complicated that it already is. Reliablity is key for bilge pumps. Battery Voltage Monitor It's always good to be able to monitor the health of your battery banks as they can tell you if your shore power is connected, or if your boat has a short, lots of useful information. We will need an arduino to measure the analog and digital inputs coming off...

Volvo Penta D3 Series Diesels

Image
One of the advantages of Volvo Penta is that they often use the same technology and capability across their entire product line. So if you like the big fancy display on a 1,000 hp IPS Diesel Engine you can get it on your 150 hp small inboard. This is the scenario that we are going to explore which i think would be ideal for a small boat repower. The D3 Diesel lineup comes in several models. Volvo lists it as having the following features: "Volvo Penta D3-110 is an in-line 5-cylinder, 2.4-liter diesel engine with an aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head, using common-rail with piezo-electric injectors, double overhead camshafts, and Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT). This contributes to outstanding torque during acceleration." D3-110  D3-150 D3-200 D3-220 I particularly like the ease of access to most components. D3-110 Displacement: 146 Cubic Inches Rated RPM: 3000 Crankshaft Power: 110 hp Emissions: EPA Tier 3 / EU RCD Stage II Cylin...

Ketogenic Diet

Cruising can cause all of us to pack on a few extra pounds. One of the most interesting and quick ways to shed extra weight, bloat and fat from your body is the Ketogenic diet. The concept is very simple and surprisingly easy to stick to. To get your body to burn fat you need to deprive it of sugar and to do that you need to stop eating carbohydrates. This forces your body into "ketosis" which is a normal state of burning fat. However this can take a few days and when you get cravings for sugar which you will simply replace it with a big slice of bacon. I am currently on Day 6 of my diet and I can tell you that the results are coming quickly. If I stick with this for another week I might even see my abs again. However once you get the results you want you can simply switch back to a low carbohydrate diet, with minimal bread, sweets, etc... sticking mainly with fat, and protein and fresh veggies the key to any diet. Best of luck cruisers!

The MacBook Pro without USB Ports

I'll get straight to the point. Eliminating classic USB ports by apple is an elitist and snobby move. However, they probably did it just to be purists. After all, someone who is going to have 35 devices hanging out of a computer, old outdated ones at that is likely to be a PC/Windows user. However, My big beef as a longtime Apple user is that there is no place to plug in my corded mouse. I travel with my laptop everywhere and I love my mouse. I have some nice 15-year-old ones a few new ones, but touch-pads just slow everything down that we love about pointing and clicking on a computer. They slow down access to context menus, you can't slide across evenly. The whole experience sucks. What touch-pads have going for them is portability. They are nice if you can't get anything else. They also look pretty. However, that begs my first question who makes a corded USB-C Mouse? I have never seen one.
