Building Your Own Boat Monitoring System with Arduino

There are lots of neat systems on the market that can help you monitor your boat and check on its status. However the downside is that most of these are a black box meaning that its hard to add functionality later and that youre locked into their system, monthly payment, etc. So lets brainstorm and think about what a good remote boat monitoring system would need. Bilge Pump Monitor As far as I can tell this is one of the biggest problems that people have with boats is the failure of their bilge pump and or batteries. So we want to know how often that silly thing is cycling on and we dont want to make the wiring any more complicated that it already is. Reliablity is key for bilge pumps. Battery Voltage Monitor It's always good to be able to monitor the health of your battery banks as they can tell you if your shore power is connected, or if your boat has a short, lots of useful information. We will need an arduino to measure the analog and digital inputs coming off...

Volvo Penta D3 Series Diesels

One of the advantages of Volvo Penta is that they often use the same technology and capability across their entire product line. So if you like the big fancy display on a 1,000 hp IPS Diesel Engine you can get it on your 150 hp small inboard. This is the scenario that we are going to explore which i think would be ideal for a small boat repower. The D3 Diesel lineup comes in several models. Volvo lists it as having the following features: "Volvo Penta D3-110 is an in-line 5-cylinder, 2.4-liter diesel engine with an aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head, using common-rail with piezo-electric injectors, double overhead camshafts, and Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT). This contributes to outstanding torque during acceleration." D3-110  D3-150 D3-200 D3-220 I particularly like the ease of access to most components. D3-110 Displacement: 146 Cubic Inches Rated RPM: 3000 Crankshaft Power: 110 hp Emissions: EPA Tier 3 / EU RCD Stage II Cylin...
